Swearing and Sexual Signs: Exploring Cultural and Linguistic Equivalents

What: Want to increase your knowledge of swearing and sexual signs along with English meanings necessary to effectively convey cultural and linguistic meaning?
This workshop will focus on analyzing and extracting the meaning of swearing and sexual vocabulary in both English and ASL, and how to then appropriately and effectively convey meaning in the target language.
Swearing and sexual ASL and English vocabulary will be taught, discussed, and demonstrated along with equivalents for commonly used phrases, words, or terms. Some of the content demonstrated (ASL concepts) will be given by the workshop participants; thus, enabling participants to draw from the knowledge and experience of everyone in the workshop.
This material will be presented in a professional and to-the-point manner, and is not intended to be offensive.
Topics of Discussion:
- Analysis of semantic factors pertaining to linguistic and cultural mediation between Deaf/Hearing cultures and subcultures.
- How personal filters may affect the interpretation.
- How vital classifier knowledge is for this content.
- How English-to-ASL Expansion techniques can be used.
- How register can impact sign choice.

Josh Garrett, CI & CT, NIC, has been interpreting professionally since 1998. He is the founder and owner of JG Interpreting and Training Services. He was the Assistant Professor of ASL Interpreting within the ITP at Goshen College as well as the Program Director for the International Education Program in Jamaica. Additionally, he taught for Purdue University in the Continuing Education Department Interpreting Certificate Program. He partnered abroad with the Jamaica Association of the Deaf. He enjoys performing Educational Interpreter staff development and training, workshops, and study groups. In addition to teaching and presenting, Josh also works as a freelance interpreter, interpreter mentor and advocate for Deaf children in educational settings. Josh has experience in a variety of settings including religious, VRS, platform, freelance, medical, and educational. He has conference interpreting and/or presenting experience at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels.

ARID is an approved sponsor for Continuing Education Activities under the CMP and ACET. The program is offered for a total of .6 CEUs in Professional Studies with a Content Knowledge Level of Beginner to Advanced. Target audience is certified and pre-certified interpreters. QAST level interpreters may earn 6 hours CEU training.
