This category is intended for individuals that wish to attend an activity which is not offered through an RID approved sponsor.  The fee for processing a PINRA is $15.

Participant Initiated Non-RID Activities (PINRAs) are activities that an interpreter/transliterator wishes to attend which are not offered by an RID approved sponsor. The activity must be sponsored by an organization with standards specific to its area of expertise. The activity must have a defined format and clearly identified educational objectives. If the application to interpreting is unclear, the application should provide a single page or more describing how attending the activity will improve the applicant’s interpreting work. PINRAs include but are not limited to: auditing a college course, non-credit courses at an educational institution, association or corporate trainings (e.g., American Bar Association, Teacher’s Union, and Social Work Association), school district in-service or an organization’s conventions/workshops. Administrative paperwork is processed by the sponsor. Participant must apply for approval from a sponsor prior to the commencement of the activity.

Step One:

Choose the activity/conference you want to attend. The activity/conference does not have to pertain strictly to interpreting. It can be a regional or national conference of another profession or could be a formal in-service training by an employer. As long as the activity is educationally beneficial to you as an interpreter, it can earn CEUs for you!

Step Two:

Contact an RID Approved Sponsor and secure their agreement to process the paperwork for the conference. Be sure to discuss the Content Area for which you are applying(Professional Studies or General Studies).

How many CEUs will be earned? (1 CEU = 10 contact hours)

Step Three:

Complete the Participant Initiated Activity Plan and Activity Report form from your RID Sponsor –   Download Form Here

Attach pertinent documentation such as an agenda, program book.

Return form and documentation to your sponsor

Step Four:

Upon completion of the activity, attain a certificate of attendance or documentation such as an agenda or program book. Send documentation to your sponsor.

This category is intended for individuals wishing to obtain CEUs for college courses taken through an accredited institution.  The fee for processing an Academic Coursework activity is $15.

CEUs may only be awarded for Academic Coursework taken from an accredited institution during the participant’s current cycle. This accreditation must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or in the U.S. or the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education in the European Union. Any other institution must be reviewed by the Professional Development Committee. Successful completion is defined as receiving at minimum a letter grade of “C” (2.0) or pass for pass/fail courses. NOTE: If the participant is auditing the course or taking it through the continuing education office of the institution, they should contact a sponsor to complete a Participant Initiated Non-RID Activity (PINRA) Plan.

Step one:

Choose the course you want to attend at an accredited college or university. The course does not have to pertain strictly to interpreting; it can be a course in Linguistics, Business, Psychology, Social Work, etc.  As long as the course is educationally beneficial to you as an interpreter, it can earn CEUs for you!

Step two:

Contact an RID Approved Sponsor to secure their agreement to process the paperwork for the course. Be sure to discuss the Content Area for which you are applying (i.e. Professional Studies or General Studies) and how many CEUs will be earned. The standard formula for determining the number of CEUs per course is as follows:

1.5 CEUs per credit hour for a course taken in a semester session.
1.0 CEUs per credit hour for a course taken in a quarter session.

Step three:

Complete the Academic Coursework Activity Report form –  Download Form Here.

Attach the following required documentation:

  • Course description and/or outline
  • College/University accreditation through the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) (usually can be found on college’s webpage)

Step four:

Upon completion of the course, attach a copy of the transcript showing successful completion of the course with a grade of “C” or higher (2.0 or higher). Return the form and documentation to your sponsor, who will file the completed paperwork online at www.rid.org with the RID national office. The RID Approved Sponsor signs the bottom portion of the form, indicating their agreement and verification to sponsor and award CEU credits.

Please Note: Academic Coursework can be processed for CEUs after the course has actually been completed. However, the coursework must have been taken during the CMP participant’s current cycle.

This category is intended for individuals wishing to obtain CEUs for Independent Study activities. Examples of successful Independent Study activities include: research, curriculum development or enhancement projects, study groups, developing effective mentoring strategies or evaluation rubrics or the preparation of scientific/clinical materials for publication.  The fee for processing an Independent Study activity is $15.

Participants should plan an Independent Study with input from and in consultation with the sponsor. The sponsor must review, approve, and monitor any Independent Study project. Please Note:  Participants must apply for and receive approval from a sponsor prior to the commencement of the activity.

Step One:

Decide the activity for which you want to earn CEUs. Keep in mind that the Independent Study will require you to answer questions such as:  What and why you want to do the activity? What are your specific goals? How will you accomplish these goals? How will you show what you have learned? How much time will the activity involve?

Step Two:

Contact an RID Approved Sponsor to discuss your ideas, CEUs (a maximum of 2.0 CEUs can be awarded for each Independent Study) and to process your paperwork. Applicants for Independent Study activities must fill out the Independent Study Plan – Download Form Here and submit it below. Please Note:  You may only begin work on your Independent Study once the sponsor approves and signs-off on the Independent Study Plan.

Step Three:

Document your time and efforts throughout the activity. At the completion of the Independent Study, send the sponsor your report, documentation and other information pertinent to the activity that you noted in your Activity Plan. The sponsor reviews the documentation to ensure that it meets the standards and goals agreed upon in the Activity Plan, and if so, will file the paperwork with RID online at www.rid.org
